Divine Natures

Drawing the Connection Between Heaven and Earth

Divine Natures is an ongoing series that reinforces the relationship between nature and ourselves as a divine whole. This collection of mid- to large-scale works unfolds across twelve scenes corresponding to the Zodiac, where expansive natural landscapes parallel an inner journey of transformation, uncertainty, longing, and renewal.

Small figures, or “travelers,” move through these environments. Drawn from archetypes found in myth, folklore, and contemporary culture, and often modeled after people from artist John A. Rice’s own life, they serve as emotional anchors within each scene.

Time collapses in these works: ancient ruins stand alongside modern architecture, celestial symbols coexist with everyday objects, and histories overlap. By allowing multiple eras to occupy the same moment, Divine Natures reminds us of our place within larger cosmic cycles and the recurring patterns that shape our lives.

Together, the series reflects a central truth: the heavens and the earth, the external world and the inner self, are not separate realms... but part of a single, living continuum.
